Benefit cap
The benefit cap is a limit on the total amount of benefit you can get.
It applies to most people aged 16 or over who have not reached State Pension age.
The amount you can get in benefits before the cap is applied is as follows:
- in a couple or have children and live outside London £384.62 a week; and
- single and live outside London £257.69 a week.
Not all benefits count towards the total amount and some benefits you receive will make you exempt from this cap.
You may wish to contact an advisor to see if this applies to you.
This may affect the amount of Housing benefit or Universal Credit you are entitled to.
You can apply for Discretionary Housing Benefit to help with any shortfall in your entitlement.
